Ladies Open 2008
The early starters, in a record field of 124 players for Thorpe Wood Ladies Open, had the best weather of the day to play their rounds although the forecast rain when it did arrive was not enough to affect the skills of the latter part of the field. The early scores were average and it was not until mid morning that the first high score came in – Jane
Ross of Elton Furze scoring 38 pts in Division 1 (handicaps 1-20). Janewas very pleased with the result as she felt she had not been playing at all well lately. Similarly, Ursula Morris of Northampton Golf Club won the Division 2 (handicaps 21-26) prize with a creditable 39 pts; she almost did not come to play as she had a very poor game during the week and felt very discouraged. However, the most surprised player of the
competition was Mary MacDonald from Bourn who won Division 3 (handicaps 27-36) with a tremendous score of 42 pts, 25 of which were scored on the last nine holes. Mary has been playing for 2-3 years and said her game was very erratic but her playing partners supported her enormously and said she could have done even better. Mary managed her high score even playing into the water hazard on the 18th, playing into at least 6 bunkers and not scoring on 2 holes. When she got it right she did so with a vengeance. Her comments after the presentation, which were reiterated by many of the ladies present, was that the course was superb, (and this is due to the work done by Mike Wood and his team of grounds staff at Thorpe Wood), the organisation first class and the friendliness of the host club wonderful. A raffle held during the day, together with proceeds from the putting competition, raised over £400 for the Lady Captain’s Charity, Diabetes UK.
