Info Sheet 5/2010

Hi Ladies

Some of you will be aware that Nicky Plumtree, last year’s lady captain, has been in hospital for a hip replacement op. All went well and she was home in 4 days. The Lady Captain has visited Nicky and, on behalf of the lady members, presented Nicky with rose bushes and Nicky has asked that her grateful thanks be passed on to the ladies. Nicky had hoped to be at the evening meal on Lady Captain’s Day but, unfortunately, will not be able to join us as there are no special facilities at Fratelli’s for the ‘disabled’. Nicky will be going into hospital again on 3 Sep to have the other hip replaced so if all goes well she will have the winter to recover and will be back on the course will us early in the new year.
----

Re Lady Captain’s Day, there are still tee times available for ladies to play - come and join in - the field will be divided into 3 divisions and there will be 3 prizes for each division. You do not have to play on both medal days to join in. There is no green fee although ladies who will not be attending the evening meal will be asked to pay £5.

At the evening meal, the trophies and vouchers will be awarded for the competitions that have taken place during the first part of the year.

Further to the choices sent out by the lady captain, lasagne has now been added to the menu.

---

A reminder that the Mixed Open takes place on Sunday 8th August and there are still tee times available - these will be between 12.30 and 2.30 approx. There are a couple of men looking for playing partners if any ladies are interested in playing.

Again the Halfway House will be open for a couple of hours on that day when soft drinks and biscuits will be available for the players. One or two volunteers to look after this would be welcome??? Any offers?

---
The lady captain has asked if any ladies could contribute a raffle prize for the AM AM in September - donations would be appreciated.

---

There are two more golf clinics arranged - one 4 Aug and the other 1 Sep. If you would like to participate contact the lady captain for more information.
---

The lady captain is considering arranging 9 hole days out for the high handicappers, or those without handicaps, possibly at Thorney Lakes or North Luffenham. Please contact her if you are interested.
---
Finally, a date for your diary, an Away Day is being organised for 13th September at Ramsey Golf Club, tees from 11 am.

The lady captain completed a very successful Charity Golf Marathon last Monday completing 6 rounds and 1 hole. She went in 11 bunkers, had 228 putts and scored 169 Stableford points. 39 stableford points were scored on her fifth round which was also the second best round she has ever achieved at Thorpe Wood. The event raised over £400 in total.

The Seniors Open takes place on Wednesday 14th July and the coordinator, Colin Bagley, has asked if any ladies would kind enough to help out with the refreshments at the Halfway House during the day. Usually there are two ladies working together for about 2-3 hours, the first pair required at about 9am and the last finishing at about 4-4.30pm. If any ladies feels they could spare some time on the day, their help would be greatly appreciated. Contact me please on 01733 236821.

Info Sheet 3/2010

Hi Ladies

Just an update on forthcoming events.

The medal competitions on the 12th and 17th of this month are nominated as qualifiers for the County Charity Competition and the best bronze and silver division players will go forward to play in the Regional Final at Peterborough Milton on Monday 6th September - all proceeds will be donated to the Anna’s Hope Charity, details of which were given in the last Info Sheet. Just a reminder that any lady who may consider playing in both the Saturday and Thursday medals must beforehand state which day she selects as her entry for this qualifier.

There is a ladies match v North Luffenham, at home, on Thurs 24th June and a mixed match v Orton Meadows, at Orton, on Sat 19th June - team lists are on display at the club as are the team lists for the matches in July against Milton (home) on Tues 6th July and Thorney Lakes (away) on Thurs 29th July.

The Lady Captain will be holding her Charity Challenge at Thorpe Wood on Monday 21st June, and the Pro AM event is on Tuesday 22nd June - details have been e-mailed to members by the lady captain.

The Lady Captain’s Day is in the fixture list for Thurs 22nd July so make a note in your diaries.

Finally, the Ladies Open on May 13th was once again well attended and went extremely well indeed.  Thanks to everyone who helped on the day and to those who contributed cakes and raffle prizes.

Info Sheet 2/2010

We are now into the golfing season with more competitions, matches against other clubs, and of course Opens.

During April there will be the Coronation Foursomes this coming Thursday the 15th, Medal competitions on Sat 17th and Thurs 22nd, with a friendly match against Toft (away) on Thurs 29th.

In May we have the Douglas Bader Mixed Greensomes on Friday 7th at 4pm so if you wish to play and cannot find a partner, do let the captain or vice captain know and they will do what they can to find you one. The 9 Holes Bring & Win is on Tues 11th May at 5.30pm. This is a very informal event - no entry fee, just bring along a prize to the value, say, of £3-£4 approx and every player wins. The main event of the ladies calendar is the Ladies Open and this is on Thurs 13th May. There are still a few tee times available if any lady is interested and can make up a team of three. You could always invite friends who are members of other clubs to play? The Ping 4BBB Qual on Mon 17th is an interesting event and both the winners and runners up receive prizes from Ping, with the winners going on to play in the Regional Finals later in the year. In May we  have a friendly match against Priors Hall (away) on Thursday 20th, and medal competitions on Sat 22nd and Thurs 27th.

The Mixed Open is on Sunday 8th August so ladies why not find yourself a partner and take part. The entry fee is £32 per couple and the format Greeensomes Stableford. Entry forms can be downloaded from the Thorpe Wood website or there are forms on the Mixed Competitions board in the foyer outside the Pro Shop.

Gill Oughton, the handicap secretary, has asked me to let you know that the new handicaps certificates for 2010 are in the red folder in the changing room for your collection.

The lady captain is planning another overnight stay with 2 rounds of golf in October at Belton, which is just north of Grantham. The stay at the Forest of Arden was enjoyed by those who attended. The accommodation and food were excellent and, although the courses were rather wet, everyone enjoyed the golf despite the rain the Monday morning.

The stableford competition on Thursday 3rd June has been nominated for the EWGA Trust when some of the entry fee is sent to the Trust to help support junior golf.

The medal competitions on Saturday 12th and Thursday 17th have been nominated as qualifiers for the County Charity Competition when the winners of the bronze and silver divisions can go forward to play in the Regional Final at Peterborough Milton Golf Club on Monday 6th September. All monies raised will be donated to the Anna’s Hope Charity. (This is the chosen charity of Suzanne Evans, the lady captain at Milton, and the Anna’s Hope charity exists to give hope to children and young people who have a brain tumour by providing better rehabilitation support for them and funding research into finding a cure.) The entry fee for this competition will be £2 per player. Any lady who may consider playing in both the Saturday and Thursday medal must beforehand state which day she selects as her entry for this qualifier.

If any lady has time to spare on Thursday 13th May to help out at the Ladies Open this would be greatly appreciated. Thorpe Wood has the reputation of being very hospitable at this event and ladies like the cakes etc that are provided at the Halfway House so if any ladies could help by providing a cake, biscuits, or scones, these would be welcome. Finally, donations towards the raffle would also be welcome and the money from the raffle goes towards the Lady Captain’s Charity which this year is Guide Dogs for the Blind. Please let me know if you can help in any way on 01733 236821 or docobag@btinternet.com

The lady captain has now selected a menu for the evening meal to be held in The Woodman on Lady Captain’s Day, Thursday 23rd July.  The cost for the meal will be £16 and it would be helpful if you could please indicate your choice from the menu on the notice now on the board in the changing room, or perhaps let the lady captain know, by Thursday 9th July.  Tee times for those ladies playing in the competition earlier in the day will be posted closer to the time.

It is hoped the meal will be 6.30 for 6.45pm.  Cheques payable to Thorpe Wood Golf Club Ladies Section please ASAP.

Regrettably Adele Gardner, the Ladies Section Treasurer, has decided to stand down at the end of this year so consequently there will be a need for a replacement.  If there is any lady member willing to be considered as a candidate for this post, perhaps they would like to discuss this with the lady captain and maybe speak to Adele if they have any questions they wish to ask.

The secretary who is the Club County Delegate attended at meeting at Wellingborough early in May.  Some of the details given/discussed are as follows:

An initial meeting has been held in respect of the proposed EGU/EWGA merger talks.  A further meeting takes place sometime this month.

An invitation will appear in the Ladies Links inviting candidates to take part in a rules test and those achieving a satisfactory mark will be invited to one of the seminars.  Applicants will be sent a questionnaire by e-mail initially and may then be invited onto a course.

It has been agreed that an active handicap will be required for entry to EWGA medals from 2010.

Buggies are allowed in EWGA medal competitions at the discretion of the club.  The use of Distance Measuring Devices continues to be a hot topic.

There was a discussion on the points arising from the meeting on the proposed EWGA/EGU merger and briefly these were:

Merger would make it easier to obtain funding from Sports England.

A merged organisation is the best option.

Women afraid they may lose their voice as the men will dominate.

Equal basis with every committee comprising of equal numbers - proportional representation would not work as women members would possibly be out voted.

Equal fees.

One HQ would be required as it would not work from a split base (at present EWGA HQ is in Birmingham and EGU HQ is at Woodhall Spa).

The merger should not take place as one ‘big bang’ but spread over 2-3 years.

Info sheet 5/09

The Ladies Open on Thursday went off very well - there was a good field and, luckily thank goodness, the weather kept fine.  The ladies appreciated the cakes etc served at the halfway house so many thanks to those provided the eats and to those who kindly donated raffle prizes.  Over £300 was collected for the lady captain’s charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.  Also many thanks indeed to the ladies who gave time to help during the day - without you the day would not have been so successful.

A reminder that the lady captains of Thorpe Wood and Orton Meadows Golf Clubs have organised a Bring & Buy, & Plant Sale, to be held in the clubroom at Orton Meadows Golf Club this coming Wednesday 20th May, 1.30 to 4.30 pm, proceeds to be divided between the two captains’ charities.  This will follow 8 holes of golf (half a green fee) for those who would be interested in playing, all for the sum of £2 to cover both prizes and refreshments.  Time for the golf - 9.30 for 10am.  For those not playing there will be a 50p fee for entrance and coffee.  This will be an opportunity to get rid of all your unwanted golf or other gear/clothes, and perhaps to get the things you really want!  If you wish, you can label your items with your name and a price and it will be your choice if you would like to contribute something towards the charities.  Also you can donate items to be sold for charity.    This could be a good opportunity to meet other ladies from Thorpe Wood and also Orton Meadows so why not come along and join in.

Also, a reminder that sign up sheets are on the board for the Singles KO and Double KO competition.  The Ping Competition is this Tuesday at 2pm and there is a medal competition on Thursday, 21 May.  The sign up sheet for the Marwills Salver competition is on the Mixed Competition board in the foyer.  If any ladies wish to play and do not have a partner, please contact the lady captain/vice captain and they will try to remedy this.

The lady captain has put a notice on the board in the changing room re her Captain’s Day on Thursday 23 July.  Anyone wishing to join in with the day please add their name to the list.

Finally, there are still tee times available for the Mixed Open on Sunday 9th August.  Entry forms are on the mixed competition board in the foyer outside the Pro Shop.

For those lady members who would be interested in playing in any of the team matches, the lady captain has put sheets on the board for ladies to show their availability.   These are friendly matches against local clubs and your support would be helpful.

The ladies team were successful last month with their Mail on Sunday match against Thorney Lakes, winning 4-1.  The next round is against Peterborough Milton, and is planned for Sunday 15th March, first tee 1pm – and any supporters would be welcomed.

Anyone who wishes to play in the 9 hole qualifying for handicap competitions are reminded that these are played on main medal days and that they should book their own tee times, put their names and tee times on the medal sign up sheets, and remember to sign the competition book. The 9 hole qualifying comp is played on the front  nine.

The sign up sheet for the Mixed Knockout Competition is on the board in the foyer, outside the shop, and anyone interested in playing should sign up by 5th April when the list will be closed.

There is a mixed match v Thorney on 5th April, sign sheet also on the board in the foyer, and anyone who would like to play please add their name to the list.

The Ladies Open  - there are still spare tee times so please join in – and bring a friend.

A Charity Event will be held at Orton Meadows on Wednesday 20th May – a Bring and Buy Sale of any items, including golf gear.  There will be a Texas Scramble over 8 holes in the morning – a poster will be displayed for this soon but please make a note in your diaries.

Info Sheet 1/09

We are already into the new year of golf and this started with a very good turnout for the first 9 Holes competition on 8 Jan.  This was won by Di Webb with 18 pts, second on countback was lady captain Nicky Plumtree with 16 pts followed by vice captain Karen Blacklock.

On the 10th January there was the Captain’s Drive In, and again a very good response from club members who braved an extremely cold day.

The next event on our calendar is the 9 Holes competition on Thursday 22nd January, the first tee time 1.32pm and the sign up sheet is on the notice board in the changing room.

During February the monthly stableford will be on Thurs 5th, there will be a 9 Holes competition on the 12th, medal competitions on Sat 14th and Thus 19th, and a 9 Holes competition on Thurs 26th.  Sign up sheets for these competitions will be put on the board before the end of this month.

The County Vets rep, Mo Hopkins, has pinned up a notice showing the county team matches for 2009 and has asked that any lady, who has paid her vets membership fee for the year, and who is interested in playing in any of the fixtures, please add her name to the list by 20 February when she has to return the list to the County.

As mentioned last year, the County will not be issuing the ‘blue books’ that gave details of the County competitions during the year.  Instead entry forms have been provided and these, together with Open Entry forms from other clubs, are in the file marked ‘OPENs’ in the changing room so if you are interested in any of the competitions, make a note of the dates in your diaries.

An entry for your diaries – the Thorpe Wood Ladies Open will be on Thursday 14th May.

Margaret Dair will be holding a Coffee Morning in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer on Monday 23rd February at her home, 32 Templeman Drive, Carlby.  All welcome - time:  10-1pm, there will be an entry fee which includes a cup of tea/coffee, a raffle and cakes etc to buy.

The first round of the Mail on Sunday Competition will take place in February, date to be confirmed, away against Thorney Lakes.  Anyone interested please let the lady captain Nicky Plumtree know, or add their name to the list in the changing room.

Finally, a halfway house will be erected on the course near the 11th tee later this month.  It is hoped this will be used to provide refreshments in the various Opens and competitions.  The Ladies Section will be helping to provide some of the equipment required and if anyone has say, brush and pan, sweeping brush, washing up bowl, cutlery, etc that may be of possible use, perhaps they would contact me.  We have already been offered a table and chairs which will be very welcome.
